This is what really worries me. The CPI (Consumer Price Index) is on a never-ending upward trajectory, with an increasing angle. Never mind the sub 4.5% inflation numbers we are constantly being fed. This constant erosion of our purchasing power is subtle, insidious and devastating. The Straits of Hormuz costs are only beginning to show through. I fear the consequences as real results of the oil and other products, as well as tariffs, really bite.
How do we even believe these numbers when:
Energy is up 17.9%
Gasoline is up 28.4%
Fuel Oil is up 54.3%
Imagine these increases flowing through the economy, medicines, food, transportation, …. Almost everything is affected.
Gold, particularly, and silver, with its industrial bias, thrive in inflationary times. The powers that be can move interest rates around, 3.0%, 3.5%, more up, more down; it is all a sham, when in my opinion we are experiencing real inflation of at least 14.0%, probably much more. In that case, real assets retain their value.
The story that because gold does not earn interest, it is a less desirable asset when interest rates increase is true, but compare it to real interest rates, not the numbers we see in the press. In my experience, as currencies debase, gold and silver adequately compensate.
This is a really worrisome situation, which I see deteriorating, with no sane strategy in place to turn it around or protect our purchasing power. We have to have a strategy and protect our own purchasing power using asset allocation.
