I love when everyone wins!
The question is: Who is actually the winner? I think President Trump wants you to think he has lost it, mentally. It makes him unpredictable. Both sides are claiming victory and as the saying goes wars are not really over when one side declares victory as much as when one side declares defeat.
There are many motivations to the war in the middle east, some apparent, some stated and some unknown.
The UK has had massive control over money, currencies, trade routes etc. which it has held for at least 100 years. In my opinion Trump is determined to take control of the strategic areas and activities controlled by other countries.
The US already controls the shipping lanes militarily but London controls shipping financially via Lloyds insurance. No insurance = no shipping. More effective than a blockade. London also controls the shipping legally through insurance contracts, based on English law, Donald Trump offering Insurance at reasonable rates and military escort undermines this lever of power.
Looking at the precise moves Trump has made, I believe that he has a better than good relationship with Putin and only reluctantly is supplying Ukraine, because Putin has not achieved Putin’s objectives (and Trump could see his peace prize floating away), and America could sell a huge amount of arms to Ukraine, Europe now pays the US for arms while Trump continues supporting Ukraine. My gut feel is that Russia will make a push, perhaps to Kyiv, then Trump will pull support from Ukraine. It may even happen before Midterm elections. (3 November 2026). He correctly sees the Russia-Ukraine war as a European war, and I think he wants out.
The United Nations I think is on its last legs, I see Trump likely pulling out of it. It has become a relatively toothless talk shop, which squanders about $60 billion if one includes humanitarian and development aid every year. Direct budget is $3.45 billion, peacekeeping $5.4 billion. The US contributes about 22% to 26% of the total budget. A nice saving if they remove themselves from the organization. But a reduction in influence in existing global power projection organisations.
Regarding China’s oil supply, its life blood is being strangled. First, the flows from Venezuela have been choked off, even though the US does not need the oil for its own domestic consumption, now the Straits of Hormuz are being blockaded particularly for Iran shipping.
Iran supplies 80% to 90% (1.38 million barrels per day) of its oil to China, which represents about 13% of China’s imported oil.
China was the premium destination of Venezuela’s oil exports. The 2025 estimate of Chinese offtake was about 470,000 barrels per day, 75% of Venezuela’s production. This no longer flows. Another blow to China.
This is enormous control and a huge throttle to the Chinese economy, such that it may reconsider any thoughts of opening a front against the US, for example Taiwan.
China is adapting by increasing imports of oil from Russia, Brazil and others. They face an overall drop of about 10% in imports.
In the meanwhile, there are streams of tankers going to the US to fill up with oil. There are interesting figures regarding deficit reduction as a result of this.
Is it win, win for the US in terms of controlling China and reducing local deficits?
Who knows the real plan? I certainly have no idea. We wait and see.
