Considering the effect of war on gold prices I asked Chat GPT the following question and got the appended reply. It is of course biased and I am sure you will see the areas of bias.

Thinking of the Ukraine attack on Russian nuclear delivery aircraft, of the morality of going against a current agreement. Your opinion please

ChatGPT said:

This is a profound and sensitive question — one that intersects military ethics, international law, and the evolving nature of war.

🧭 The Moral Dilemma

Ukraine’s alleged attack on Russian nuclear-capable aircraft, even if those aircraft were not carrying nuclear weapons at the time, raises key questions:

  1. Does Ukraine have the moral right to strike such targets?
  2. Is it wrong to violate a prior understanding or agreement — even during a defensive war?

Let’s look at both sides of the ethical tension.

⚖️ Argument For the Attack (Moral Justification)

  • Self-defense: Ukraine is under full-scale invasion. Under jus ad bellum (the right to go to war), it has every moral and legal right to strike at legitimate military targets inside the aggressor’s territory — including delivery systems for weapons that have destroyed Ukrainian cities.
  • Precedent and deterrence: Russian Tu-95 and Tu-22M aircraft have been used to launch cruise missiles that kill civilians. If these aircraft are capable of delivering nuclear payloads but are used conventionally, they are still lawful targets — especially if they’re being actively used in the war.
  • Escalation is already asymmetrical: Russia has violated multiple international norms — targeting civilian infrastructure, abducting children, and threatening nuclear use. To say Ukraine should hold to a prior understanding (e.g., not targeting nuclear delivery systems) when Russia breaks larger taboos creates a moral imbalance.

⚖️ Argument Against the Attack (Moral Caution)

  • Breaking implicit red lines: Some understandings — like not targeting nuclear delivery platforms — may be informal but are meant to reduce existential risk. Breaching them can set dangerous precedents or provoke escalation.
  • Moral high ground: One of Ukraine’s greatest assets has been its moral clarity and restraint. Deliberately expanding the war into strategic nuclear realms (even without nukes involved) risks undermining this and feeding Russian propaganda.
  • Nuclear stability doctrine: In Cold War logic, targeting the other side’s nuclear triad (even just part of it) was seen as potentially first-strike behavior. Even if Ukraine doesn’t possess nukes, the symbolism can create real strategic instability.

🌍 My View Chat GPT (Balancing Principles)

I believe Ukraine is morally justified in striking any actively used military target that is used to kill its civilians — including nuclear-capable bombers if they are launching conventional attacks.

However, moral restraint and strategic caution are also crucial — especially around anything that might be interpreted as escalation toward nuclear conflict. Ukraine and its allies must carefully weigh each strike’s potential to trigger irrational or disproportionate responses from Russia.

In other words:

Yes, defend yourself — but never lose sight of the bigger fire you’re playing next to.

My view (Larry)

I believe that this was an extremely dangerous move. I believe that it was sanctioned by Lindsay Graham and his cohorts. I do not believe it was sanctioned by Donald Trump. I think that ‘Republican’ support was promised. I believe that NATO and the European countries of France and Germany as well as the UK were also intimately involved. This is my conjecture. They want conflagration and need it because of their failing economies. I think the retribution on Ukraine will be beyond their imagination. I believe Putin is aware of the involvement of other nations but will keep his cool regarding nuclear escalation.

The long term chart below shows the perfect cup and handle pattern. Usually a pattern such as this will resolve strongly upwards. We wait for a positive break upwards at the green circle.

Then hopefully the price will start moving to its correct relative value.
