A look at the Gold and Silver Charts (02.07.2026)

The Economy in Depression

Global Gold stocks by World Gold Council and Von Greyerz

Van Greyerz writes in his newsletter that gold reserves valued at today’s prices comprise about 0.5% of the value of global wealth, $32 trillion. This represents the value of all the gold mined in human history. As a comparison, the market capitalization of the 12 largest US corporations equals $30 trillion. This shows how vastly undervalued gold is relative to world financial assets.

Silver, as you know from my previous newsletters, I believe, will outpace gold in the next run up. As a speculative investment, particularly at these prices, it is extremely cheap. Just taking into consideration the supply shortage of the past six years makes silver investment a great story. Then there is the constriction of supply from China. That will impact the Western supply situation, which will probably affect local pricing.

What is the potential downside? My major concern is if (when) we have a depression, the industrial component of silver usage falls sharply. In that case the monetary usage should hopefully hold up, but price and volatility will be strongly influenced by the disappearance of industrial utility.

Platinum is 17 times rarer than gold, trading at less than half of the price of gold as electric vehicles reduce reliance on catalytic converters used in fuel-driven engines. In addition, platinum has supply problems due to uncertain deliveries from Russia and South Africa, which one would think would push prices up.

As an aside, I think that as long as the FED continues to pump between $60 billion and $70 billion a month into the economy, the economy and the markets should hold up. The negative result of that pump is inevitable inflation, coupled with profligate government spending and more cash in the system. All super inflationary.

A worst case scenario for the average person, in my opinion, is stagflation which looks very likely as things are at present. Under stagflationary conditions gold and silver should perform very well based on previous data.

Copper (SELL: 23 JUNE 2026). A very difficult market to trade right now. I worry that the falling copper price is giving us an early indication of a worldwide economic slowdown. Many of the effects of the on again off again closure of the Straits of Hormoz are only now beginning to be felt.
